Red Finger Millet: Africa’s Superfood

Red Finger Millet: Africa’s Superfood

For generations, red finger millet, known as wimbi, was a staple food in African homes. It nourished families, strengthened communities, and sustained people long before imported cereals and heavily processed breakfast foods became common across African cities.

Red finger millet has fed generations across the continent, sustaining mothers through pregnancy, fuelling children through long school days, and nourishing elders into old age. Today, science is catching up to what African communities have known for centuries. Wimbi is one of the most nutrient-dense grains on earth. And as the world turns back toward natural, whole, and honest foods, this ancient African crop is stepping forward as a modern nutritional powerhouse.

What sets red finger millet apart is the combination of calcium, iron, fibre, magnesium, essential amino acids, antioxidants and its gluten-free nature. All in one small grain grown from African soil. The most striking of these is calcium. Red finger millet contains approximately 344mg of calcium per 100g. That is roughly ten times the calcium found in maize and thirty times that found in white rice making it exceptional for bone health.

Here is how red finger millet compares with other common grains:

Nutrient (per 100g) Red Finger Millet Wheat Maize Rice
Calcium (mg) 344 34 7 10
Iron (mg) 3.9 3.5 2.7 0.8
Dietary Fibre (g) 3.6 2.7 2.0 0.4
Protein (g) 7.3 10.3 9.4 7.1
Magnesium (mg) 137 126 127 35
Gluten-Free Yes No Yes Yes

The iron content similarly stands out at nearly five times the level found in rice making it essential in fighting anaemia, particularly for young children and pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

At Simply Foods Limited, we have built our mission around this grain. We are not chasing trends. We are returning to roots. And we are doing it without compromise preserving the nutritional richness of wimbi while making it convenient, accessible, and delicious for modern Kenyan families.
